License Agreement for Sam Spade for Windows Source

    Definitions

"Package" refers to the collection of files distributed by the
Copyright Holder, and derivatives of that collection of files
    created through textual modification.

"Standard Version" refers to such a Package if it has not been
modified, or has been modified in accordance with the wishes of the
    Copyright Holder as specified below.

"Copyright Holder" is whoever is named in the copyright or
    copyrights for the package.

"You" is you, if you're thinking about copying or distributing this
    Package.

"Freely Available" means that no fee is charged for the item itself,
though there may be fees involved in handling the item. It also
means that recipients of the item may redistribute it under the same
    conditions they received it.

      * Software that requires the user to regularly download
advertising material is not considered Freely Available.
      * Software that requires the user to periodically take some action
irrelevant to the use of the software to reenable the software
        is not considered Freely Available.
      * Software that only provides limited functionality unless a fee
is paid is not considered Freely Available.

 2.

    Discussion

Everything following is /not/ part of the license itself, just some
comments and explanation.

The short form is...

  * If you just want to redistribute Sam Spade executables that's OK, as
long as you charge only reasonable distribution costs.
  * If you want to bundle Sam Spade with other software you sell, that's
OK as long as you make it clear that Sam Spade isn't your software
    and point to http://samspade.org/ssw/
  * If you want to use the source code in a non-abusive way within your
    organisation, that's OK.
  * If you want to use the source code as part of a project released
under the GPL license that's /probably/ OK, but you'll inherit the
    "no abusive use" requirement.
  * If you want to use the source code as part of your own freeware
    application that's OK.

...but read the full license before investing any work in using the
code. Contact me <mailto:steve@blighty.com> if you need clarification.

    Footnotes

 1.

This may not always be a good idea, though. For distribution over
the internet it may be better to refer to the home site of the
package, or to a well-maintained archive (sunsite, cdrom.com etc.)
than to provide a local copy.

 2.

If you have a /really/ good reason to want to do this, contact me.

 3.

If you're an ISP wanting to redistribute Sam Spade as part of your
signup kit you're actively encouraged to do so. I may be able to
build you a custom version, preconfigured to use your DNS, mail and
    web servers.
